Kui Xing — Patron of writers and scholars; unknown creator graphic artist; nianhua New Year’s picture; early 20th century, Beijing; Chinese; graphic print; height 26.3 cm, width 28.5 cm., The image shows a worn paper sheet with a large central face rendered in bold red, surrounded by faded black sketch lines and brushstrokes; there are a few additional partial faces and figures sketched along the left and right edges in black and red tones. A horizontal band of turquoise and green appears near the top, and there are patches of purple along the sides of the central face. The background paper is a beige or tan color with distressed, textured marks and darker smudges throughout, and several areas show layered red wash and black printed or stamped impressions.
