Red-figure bowl kylix, 3rd quarter of the 4th century BC, Apulia. Yellow clay tending to red with glossy black engobe; some elements painted white. Bowl with ring-shaped base with two vices attached to the rim horizontally; palmettes beneath the vices. Belly decorated with two scenes: Scene A — a young woman semi-reclining on the ground, facing left, holding a wreath in her left hand and a woven basket on her outstretched right hand; wearing a long smooth chiton, pearl necklace, double bracelets, hair in a bun covered by a kekryphalos. Scene B — Eros flying, facing left, holding a musical instrument in the right hand and a wreath with ribbon in the left; hairstyle and jewelry matching Scene A bun with kekryphalos, double bracelets, pearl necklace, with ankle bracelets and a diadem; entire figure has hermaphroditic features. Function: vessel kylix. Condition: numerous chips, engobe dull in places. Dimensions: height 5.1 cm, width 17.5 cm, depth 10 cm. Keywords: red-figure pottery, bowls, Eros, music, musical instruments, seated women, wreath iconography., A shallow bowl with a pair of horizontal handles, shown against a neutral gray background, painted primarily in black with terracotta and beige areas; the central exterior shows a reclining winged figure in beige with detailed feathered wings and dark hair, surrounded by decorative scrolling foliage motifs in beige and terracotta on either side, and a patterned border near the rim; the bowl sits on a short foot that is terracotta with a black band at the base; surface wear and small chipped areas reveal the underlying terracotta.
