Black-finished askos, unknown Campanian workshop, black-finished pottery, askos, Campania Italy. Askos with a profiled foot and a semicircular body closed at the top with a slightly recessed surface. Narrow neck ending in a wide rim. Ribbon-shaped handle attached to the neck and to the upper surface of the vessel. Appliqué with a female head glued to the upper surface of the vessel, probably Medusa, surrounded by a wreath of intertwined snakes. Finish is black, shiny, worn in places, particularly on the handle and the edge of the rim. Light orange clay. Handle and neck cracked and glued. Mid 3rd century BCE., A rounded ceramic vessel with a single arched handle and a short spout, shown against a plain gray background; the surface of the vessel is predominantly black with areas of worn paint revealing lighter, tan-colored spots and edges, and there are small scuffs and chips across its body and handle.
