Enkolpion, Ruthenian workshop; bipartite enkolpion in the form of a Greek cross arms straight, not widening with side and upper arms terminating in medallions; side medallions separated from arms by projections teardrops and a semicircular strip; upper and lower medallions marked by projections teardrops at their bases; external outline of the obverse emphasized by a raised edge. Hinges at top and bottom; bead at top. Obverse: central crucified Christ wearing a long, wide perizonium; cruciform halo and titulus above; head turned to the right; braid of hair on Christ’s left shoulder; very large hands encroaching on medallion; feet on a suppedaneum; side and upper medallions with half-figures of saints facing frontally—upper medallion possibly Pantocrator or an archangel, left medallion Mary, right medallion St. John; neither vertical nor horizontal beam of the cross is visible. Reverse: central standing Mother of God holding the youthful Christ Hodegetria; side and upper medallions with frontal busts of saints. Cast relief convex with strongly archaizing character. 12th–13th century, Kievan Rus'; bronze cross; height 12 cm, width 7 cm., An aged metal cross-shaped pendant lies against a white background, showing a dark brown and greenish patina with areas of reddish-brown and black; the pendant has rounded lobed ends and raised, worn decorative forms on its surface, and a small looped attachment at one end with a hollow, bell-like ring connected by a short metal link.
