Annunciation with Unicorn Polyptych, Master of the Annunciation with Unicorn Polyptych, 4th quarter of the 15th century ca. 1480, Annunciation of Mary iconography, unicorns, medieval art, masterpiece; painted wings possibly connected to the Master's workshop; dating attributions range ca. 1460–1500 with proposals that one artist made sculptures and paintings around 1480 following the graphic art of M. Schongauer; representation of Mary the Servant in the Temple based on the engraving L 61 by Master E.S. 1467; suggested dependencies on the Nuremberg Master of the St. Wolfgang Altarpiece and on Schongauer engravings B9, B10, B18 as models of scenes; originally for an altar in St. Elizabeth's Church, Wroclaw., A tall, rectangular painted wooden altarpiece with a dark background showing a pair of hinged panels bordered in red and decorated with painted religious scenes in muted greens, reds, browns, and golds, topped by a sculpted group of gilded and polychrome carved figures seated and standing with a few crowned figures and a row of smaller heads behind them, and a carved lower section featuring a row of small niche-like compartments holding several painted and gilded sculpted saintly figures wearing crowns, robes, and head coverings in gold, blue, brown, and black tones; the painted panels display a few clustered human figures in devotional and narrative poses, draped in robes of red, green, purple, and brown, along with architectural or rocky landscape elements in earthy greens and browns, and the whole object rests on a dark base above the lower carved register.
