Portrait of a Young Woman in a White Empire Dress, Mainelli, Carl 1779–1838 painter. En face portrait of a woman, bust slightly to the left. Curly brown hair in a bun. Wearing a white Empire dress, bustiered, high at the waist, with a double sapphire ribbon tied in a bow and an amaranth shawl. Background grey-pink, damaged with water stains. Binding: secondary, contemporary, made of profiled wood polished to a walnut finish; brass rim on the inside. Colors largely faded so that only a sketch of the figure remains. Beneath the miniature: thin sheet of ducat gold sealed with paper and ownership numbers on the bottom: 5873 MN / Bat. 183 / 9477 Rew. On the reverse, cardboard box covered with dark cherry paper, with black paint on the bottom: 5873 MN. Dated ca. 1815. Miniature height 5.4 cm., A circular framed miniature portrait of a young person with pale skin and curly brown hair, shown from the chest up and wearing a light-colored garment with a darker shoulder drape; the face has blue eyes and a neutral expression. The portrait is set behind a gold inner rim and a wider wooden outer frame with a hanging ring at the top. Visible colors include brown, gold, beige, pale pink, cream, light blue, and gray.
