Teofil Wisniowski 1805/6–1847, participant in the November Uprising and Carbonari in Galicia; painter amateur. Three-quarter portrait of a man; miniature, height 4.9 cm, width 3.8 cm; dated circa 1840, Poland. Bust slightly turned to the left. Dark blond hair and mustache, gray eyes. Wears a white collar, black zupan with a row of silver buttons, and a black kontusz with magenta lapels. Background ash gray, lightened around the head. Frame: mismatched oval rim of zinc-plated silver; convex glass. On the reverse of the binding a label inscribed: Teofil Wisniowski / executed in Lviv on Execution Hill in 1846. Historical notes: emigrant, publicist, social activist; participant in the November Uprising 1830–1831 and organizer of the 1846 underground uprising in Galicia; in 1846 commander of a unit fighting Austrians near Narajów; captured by two Rusyn peasants, handed to the Austrians, arrested, sentenced to death and hanged in 1847 on a hill near Lviv known thereafter as Death Hill., An oval pendant with a metallic loop shows a small painted portrait of a young man with pale skin, light brown hair, and a faint mustache, wearing a dark coat with a pinkish-red collar and a white shirt visible at the neck, set against a muted bluish-gray background and surrounded by a dark mat and a silver-toned decorative metal frame; visible colors include gray, silver, pale skin tones, light brown, black, pinkish-red, white, and bluish-gray.
