Half-length, seated with a sheet of parchment in his hands, in black clerical robes, around his neck the Order of the White Eagle and Order of St. Stanislaus; on the right two order stars. Background ash-gray, lightened around the head. On the reverse in black ink at the top: Ignacy Massalski / Bishop of Vilnius. Previously believed to depict Ignacy Massalski 1727–1794; the miniature combines elements from two oil compositions showing Primate Michal Poniatowski, including one with plans for the rotunda of the palace in Jablonna. 1780, Poland. Miniature; height 6.0 cm, width 5.1 cm. Binding: oval frame of gilded bronze on a flat rectangular board of ebony-stained wood, decorative grip., A framed oval portrait set in a rectangular black background with a gold decorative hanger at the top shows a seated figure with pale skin and powdered white hair wearing a dark gray coat with lighter gray sash and lace cuffs, a decorative star-shaped medal on the chest, and a pale face with a neutral expression; the oval frame is gilded with patterned inner edge, and behind the figure there are muted brown and red shapes suggesting stacked objects and a carved brown and gold chair back.
