Portrait of Tadeusz Kosciuszko in a general's uniform with the Virtuti Militari order, possibly commemorating the victory at Zielence 1792. Three-quarter torso left, head in left profile; standing in a general's uniform with a saber at his side. Next to him, on a table, a black helmet with a plume; background left a dark gray curtain, right a rampart, a white horse with a rider, and distant hills against the sky. Secondary setting: profiled round frame of massive ebony with an inlaid strip of ivory and convex, very thick lenticular glass. Inscriptions on the back of the binding: Gift / of the late Helena / Karolowa / Chlapowska / 1895 and additional provenance notes. Miniature, possibly dated 1794, Poland; height 5.7 cm, width 5.6 cm., A round framed portrait shows a man in a blue military-style coat with white decorative trim and a sash around his waist, standing in profile and pointing with one hand; his hair is brown and wavy, his face is pale with subtle reddish tones, and he wears a white cravat and a darker vest beneath the coat. The background includes a landscape with muted sky tones and distant pale-gray and beige hills, and a darker drapery or curtain to one side. The circular frame is black with white rings and a small metallic hanging loop at the top; overall visible colors include blue, white, black, brown, pale skin tones, gray, beige, and hints of red.
