Portrait of a Man in a Frock Coat, painted by Henry Collen 1800–fl.1872, 1837. Seated waist-high, three-quarter left. Dark salt-and-pepper hair, hazel eyes. Wearing a white shirt, tie, vest, and black frock coat. Background shows the back of an armchair with red upholstery and a yellow-brown-gray wall. Miniature on cardboard, height 12.1 cm, width 9.7 cm. Binding: cherry leather case, metal frame with braided border, passe-partout. Inscribed bottom left: “H. Collen / 1837.” On the reverse in ink: “1837 / Painted by Henry Collen / miniature painter to / the Queen / and HRH The Duchess of Kent / 37 Somerset Street / Portman Square / London.” Pencil inscription on the cardboard edge: “Col Porter Cate / XII, 1837.”, A painted portrait of a seated man displayed inside a rectangular frame and a hinged case; the man wears a dark coat with a high collar and a white shirt visible at the neck, and he has short dark hair and a neutral expression. The frame around the portrait is a yellowish-cream with rounded inner corners and shows some darker spots. The case surrounding the frame is a deep red or burgundy with a textured interior trim and a braided border in a similar red. The portrait background is muted brown and beige tones, and the chair behind the man appears to be red. The man’s clothing is dark blue or black, his skin tones are pale with rosy cheeks, and the hinge and clasp of the case show metallic and off-white elements.
