Reclining Venus with a Monkey and a Cupid, Bechon, Karol Charles 1732-1812 painter. Cupids, nudes, antiquity, animals, interiors, symbols, Polish miniatures, mythologies. Venus lying on a bed covered with red fabric; a monkey with a triangle sits at the head, a cupid sleeps at her feet. In the background an emerald curtain. Signed: inre et fait par Ch. Bechon / a. Varsovie 1796. On the reverse, an illegible inscription in pencil and a round label; inside the circle an ink inscription 2501/Ter. Binding: secondary, narrow wooden board. Illustration made in miniature technique. Miniature, height 14.2 cm, width 19.5 cm., A reclining nude woman with pale skin lies on a bed draped with white and red cushions and sheets, propping her head on one hand and looking toward the viewer; a small dark gray monkey sits near her outstretched hand holding a thin object, and a reclining child with light brown hair rests on a pillow behind her holding a round fruit. The background is dominated by deep green and teal draped curtains with darker shadows, and the scene is set within a wooden frame that shows brown wood grain. Colors visible include pale skin tones, white, red, deep green, teal, dark gray, brown, and touches of muted gold.
