Grey powdered wig à la lion; cuirass and crimson tailcoat embroidered with gold; red ribbon and order cross. A knight's helmet with pink, blue, and white ostrich feathers at right. Background: sky and clouds, left brown-rust and lilac-rust curtain. Rectangular profiled wooden frame, black lacquer with gilded inner edge. Inscription on reverse: Ludwig VIII/Landgraf von Hessen-Darmstadt/geb. 16 April 1631 + 17 October 1768/Gemalt von Landgrafl. Hessen-Darmstadtischen/Hofmaler Brachweld, 1750. Miniature, 14.0 cm × 11.0 cm., A framed painted portrait of a person wearing a powdered white curled wig and a red coat with intricate gold embroidery, a pale blue sash across the chest, and a decorative collar; the figure has a neutral expression and holds a plumed hat with blue, white, and pink feathers. The background shows draped fabric in dark brown and patterned reddish tones on one side and a cloudy sky with blue highlights on the other. The portrait is enclosed in a black outer frame with a gold inner trim and a small gold hanging ring at the top. Colors visible include red, gold, white, pale blue, dark brown, blue, pink, black, and gray.
