Portrait of Princess Teofila Strzezyslawa Sapiezyna née Jablonowska 1742–1816, wife of Prince Józef Sapieha. Miniature height 4.9 cm, width 4.1 cm, painted c. 1760, Strasbourg, France. Attributed creators: Johann Martin Weiss II 1738–1807 graphic artist, Antoni Lech Szretter 1830–1891 graphic artist, Marie-Cunegonde Huin fl. 1796–1801 author, Charles-Alexis Huin 1735–1796 painter. Depicts the duchess en face in a blue redingote reminiscent of Polish costume, powdered hair in a high chignon with a feathered egret headdress French fashion. Biographical and historical notes: Teofila, from the highest Polish aristocracy, well educated and politically engaged, participated with her husband in the Bar Confederation and later emigrated to Strasbourg; she kept a diary 1771–1775, poems, and correspondence, and records indicate she sat for portraitist Charles-Alexis Huin., An oval gold pendant with a blue enamel inner band contains a miniature painted portrait of a woman with pale skin and powdered gray hair styled high, wearing a light blue hat adorned with small pink flowers and a white feather, a light blue dress with fur trim and decorative lacing; the portrait background is dark gray and the pendant hangs against a medium gray background.
