Berezyna, study, Kossak, Wojciech 1856–1942 painter, painting, height 85.5 cm, width 136 cm, A framed painting depicts a snowy landscape with a pale purple-gray sky and distant tree line in muted purples and browns, a few orange-brown trees near the horizon, and a snow-covered field in white and pale blue. In the midground there is a group of people and horses rendered in dark blues, browns, and blacks moving across the snow toward a cluster of rustic buildings; one building has a steep snow-covered roof painted in white and light blue with warm yellow-orange highlights on its walls. In the foreground a rounded snowbank in white and pale gray occupies the right side with a tall post rising from it, and a few figures in dark coats and muted reds are walking or riding horses past the snowbank. Several smaller figures are spread across the mid to far field, some appearing to be pulling or carrying objects, and there are touches of warm rust and ochre among the vegetation and structures. The painting is enclosed in a wide ornate gold frame.
