Self-portrait, Wankowicz, Walenty 1799–1842 painter. A young, dark-haired man with a slim face, short sideburns and hair combed sideways over his forehead towards the temples, wearing a green blouse and a white shirt with a slightly raised collar tied with a white drawstring, shown bust, turned three-quarters to the left, looking directly at the viewer. In front of him he holds a porte-crayon in his hand, resting on a small book with a red-brown cover. His oval face is illuminated from the darkness by a strong light coming from the right. Blue eyes, long, slightly upturned nose, clearly defined lips, chin slightly jutted forward. Black and brown background. At the top right, an inscription in white and yellow oil, calligraphic script: Walenty Wankowicz. | m. pr. pinxit. Before 1840, painting, height 56.6 cm, width 43 cm., A close-up of a painted human face showing an eye, part of the other eye, a nose, and mouth with visible brushstrokes and surface craquelure; skin tones range from pale beige and cream to warm peach and pink with areas of reddish-brown and muted brown shadows, the irises appear bluish-gray with dark pupils, the lips show muted red and rose hues, and the background and deep shadows include dark brown and nearly black tones.
