The Martyrdom of St. John of Nepomuk, by Szymon Czechowicz 1689–1775. At night, soldiers in Roman robes throw a young priest in a black cassock, white surplice, and a cape made of dormouse from a three-span stone bridge. Four putti float above the water, three holding keys, a laurel wreath, and a sealed letter; the last points a finger to the sky. On the bridge, besides soldiers armed with pikes, two old men left and two young men right discuss the matter; one observes the martyrdom, another rides a horse. Multi-figure martyrdom scene, ca. 1750; painting in brown and grey tones. Dimensions: 61 × 86.5 cm., A painted scene shows a stone bridge spanning dark water with three large arches and a few vertical supports; the bridge and surrounding architecture are various shades of gray and beige. A group of armored figures in metallic gray helmets and muted clothing in tones of blue, brown, green, and red crowd the bridge railing, some holding long spears and polearms, while a central robed figure in white and black leans outward with arms extended. Nearby, several onlookers in earthy green and brown garments watch from the bridge, and a person in reddish clothing sits on a white horse at the right. Below the railing a group of cherubic children with pale skin and small white wings hover and float, their draped cloths in soft blue, yellow, pink, and green; one child holds a leafy palm, another holds a circular wreath, and another reaches toward a small rectangular object. The sky above is dark with deep brown and gray tones and a faint glow around the central figure’s head. The overall color palette includes muted grays, browns, beiges, whites, blacks, blues, greens, reds, yellows, and pinks.
