The painting by the 19th-century battle painter Józef Brandt presents an episode from the history of Poland: the great battle won by the Polish army against the Ottoman Empire at Chocim in 1621. Outstanding example of Brandt's mastery of battle painting. 1867; oil on canvas; 190 × 337 cm., A large painted scene fills the frame showing a chaotic battle on open ground under a cloudy sky. In the foreground there are mounted figures and fallen figures on the grass, with several horses in motion and a group of riders wearing varied garments and armor, including cloaks and helmets; one rider in the left center wears a bright red cloak while another nearby wears a yellow garment. The central area contains riders on brown, black, and white horses moving toward the middle distance, and there is a visible plume of smoke or dust rising and spreading across the scene. To the left edge a cluster of soldiers stands with spears and banners in earthy browns and muted reds, and to the right edge more riders and figures extend into the distance with darker clothing and some brighter touches of red and blue. The ground shows trampled vegetation in greens and browns, and the sky occupies a large portion of the upper area with tones of gray, pale blue, and white. The overall palette includes gray, brown, green, red, yellow, black, white, and blue.
