In the Kitchen, Sorgh, Hendrick Martensz. ca. 1610–1670 painter, Dutch painting, genre scene in an interior depicting a kitchen with women, men, fish and work; dated 1643; painting; height 46.3 cm, width 38 cm; with frame: height 70.5 cm, width 59.5 cm, thickness 9 cm., A dim interior scene shows a woman and a man near a window with leaded panes; the woman stands by a stone basin while the man kneels beside a basket of fish on the floor. The woman wears a light-colored bodice and apron over a dark skirt, and the man wears a reddish cap and brownish outer garment with dark stockings. On the floor are a few baskets and bowls containing fish and a pale poultry bird, along with several kitchen vessels in muted brown and copper tones. To the left a wooden table or shelf holds jugs and a hanging piece of meat; a woven birdcage hangs from the ceiling in the darker central area. The overall palette is composed of deep browns, dark blues, muted reds, ochre, and touches of pale flesh tones and dull metallic hues.
