In the foreground a chaotic battle scene is visible with many mounted figures and fallen figures on the ground; horses appear in colors including brown, black, and white. Several figures wear garments in red, green, and blue tones, and some wear head coverings in pale and dark shades. There are a few banners or cloths in warm colors held above the combatants and some smoke or dark haze rising near the center-right. The middle ground contains a busy shoreline or plain with a group of small structures and silhouettes of distant buildings along a waterline, rendered in soft blues and grays. To the right a rocky hillside rises to a fortified building or tower colored in earthy browns and reddish tones; the hillside includes dark green and brown vegetation. Scattered on the ground are a few objects and pieces of equipment in muted browns and grays. The entire painting is enclosed by a narrow dark brown frame.
