Ascension, Jan Matejko 1838–1893. Against the background of a red-orange burning heart, a youthful Christ with stigmata stands frontally, arms spread wide, wrapped on his back and around his hips in a white perizonium. His head is slightly bowed to the right shoulder, his gaze directed at the viewer., Above Christ's head, against a cloud of flames, a white Dove of the Holy Spirit hovers. Around the heart are four small angel heads with wings. In the lower corners are two angels: at left, an angel's head turned to the right with the instruments of the Passion of Christ in front of it; at right, a bust seen from the back of an angel in a green robe supporting with both hands a gray stone slab from a demolished grave. The corners of the composition are black. 1884, Bielany. Painting; height 103 cm, width 66.8 cm; with frame: height 114 cm, width 77 cm, thickness 6.5 cm., A central male figure with long brown hair and a beard is shown floating with arms outstretched, draped in flowing white and gray cloth that wraps around his waist and trails downward; his torso and legs are exposed. The background is dominated by warm orange and reddish tones forming a glowing aura. Above the central figure is a white dove with wings spread, surrounded by brighter orange and yellow light. Several cherubic heads with wings appear near the top corners and sides, showing pale skin and brown hair. At the bottom right a person with dark hair wearing a green garment looks upward while holding a rectangular object, and at the bottom left a small head with light brown hair lies near darker, shadowed folds and a few scattered objects. Overall colors visible include orange, red, yellow, white, gray, brown, green, and dark shadowy tones.
