Jug, Westerwald ceramics center; ca. 1400–, stoneware jug with spherical body, high cylindrical neck and small triangular spout; wide almost cylindrical foot profiled with transverse rims and widened by a roller at the base; prominent U-shaped applied handle. Glazed in grey and cobalt blue with manganese accents. Relief decoration: three oval medallions within a wreath of radially arranged stylized lilies on the body. Central medallion: coat of arms with a crowned griffin; side medallions: busts of Louis XIV. Each medallion is surrounded by a ribbon inscribed LUDOVICUS XIII.FRANCIAE.ET.N.REX.CHR.1679 and a laurel wreath. Below the medallions a symmetrical floral composition includes French lilies and the letters PR. Belly background is sapphire except for a wide vertical stripe at the back, Louis's hair, the background of the ribbons and plant frames of the medallions, and the centers of the lilies, which are cherry-brown. Late 17th–18th century, Germany. Vessel; height 27.5 cm, width 17.5 cm, depth 15.5 cm., A ceramic vessel with a round body, a narrow tall neck, and a flared foot, finished in deep blue glaze with areas of cream and brown; the body shows a central raised medallion containing a sculpted heraldic lion in cream and brown tones surrounded by ornate scrollwork, and the rest of the rounded surface is decorated with a ring of raised shell-like motifs in cream with brown centers set against the blue; the neck and foot display horizontal bands of blue and cream, and the rim has a cream top with a thin blue band; the overall surface shows glossy glazing and subtle variations of blue, cream, brown, and pale tan.
