White tin-glazed earthenware painted in cobalt with a genre scene depicting an Indian smoking a pipe under a tobacco bush and a vase labeled No. 17. Scene set against a schematic seascape with two sailing ships. An Indian sits on a pedestal supporting an ovoid vase with a lid; on the opposite side of the pedestal is a basket with a pineapple and a liquid container. Similar tobacco jars were produced in the Netherlands throughout the 18th century. The inscriptions on the vase on the pedestal refer either to the origin or the type of tobacco. 18th century, Netherlands; Delft. Vessel. Height 25 cm; width 21.5 cm. Lid: height 7.6 cm; width 12.8 cm., A ceramic jar with a rounded vase shape and a metallic lid with a small round knob is shown against a neutral gray background; the jar is primarily white with blue painted decorations including a few stylized leaves, a seascape with sailing ships and clouds, and ornamental motifs, and the lid appears brass-colored.
