The scene is set against a schematic seascape with two sailing ships. An Indian sits on a pedestal on which stands an ovoid vase with a lid; on the opposite side of the pedestal sits a basket with a pineapple and a container for liquid. Similar vessels serving as tobacco jars were produced in the Netherlands throughout the 18th century.
