Tobacco jar with brass lid, De Vergulde Blompot faience factory; 1616–1841; Delft ceramics centre; ca. 1600– . Ovoid vase with a low, slightly parted neck. White tin-glazed faience painted in cobalt with a genre scene depicting an Indian smoking a pipe under a tobacco bush and a vase with the number No. 17. The scene is set against a schematic seascape with two sailing ships. An Indian sits on a pedestal on which stands an ovoid vase with a lid; on the opposite side of the pedestal sits a basket with a pineapple and a container for liquid. Similar vessels serving as tobacco jars were produced in the Netherlands throughout the 18th century. The inscriptions on the vase standing on the pedestal referred either to the origin or the type of tobacco. 18th century, Delft, Netherlands. Vessel: height 25 cm; width 21.5 cm. Lid: height 7.6 cm; width 12.8 cm., A rounded ceramic jar with a domed metallic lid topped by a small knob sits against a neutral gray background; the jar has a white base color with blue painted decoration showing a scene that includes a figure wearing a feathered headpiece seated beside a large urn, stylized leaves and palm-like foliage arching above, a basket or barrel-like object, and a small sailing ship in the distance, with the blue paint varying in shade from deep navy to lighter blue tones and the lid appearing brass-colored.
