Bed finial, ca. 1757–1760. Baroque wooden hospital bed finial in the form of a pediment with volutes at the sides and a central corbel supporting the bust of a young woman; fastened with two pins to the front section of the cornice crowning the canopy. Outline of the finial and corbel highlighted with a black ribbon stucco inlay. Corbel has an oval opening that once contained a wooden rotating medallion with inlaid letters on obverse and reverse missing. Runners feature garlands of ribbons and bay leaves; volutes have small brackets with turned, cup-shaped pinnacles. Makers: Jakub Fontana 1710–1773, designer; Jan Chryzostom Redler 1704–1779, woodcarver. Origin: Hospital of St. John of God, Warsaw. Furniture fragment. Dimensions: height 66 cm, width 93 cm, depth 16 cm., A dark-toned bust of a person viewed in three-quarter profile, with the head turned slightly upward and to the side, showing textured hair and a smooth face with subtle wear spots; the clothing is draped with visible folds and areas of lighter wear, and the sculpture sits on a worn wooden block and a small wooden stand with a cutout base, all set against a plain gray background. Colors visible include dark brown to black on the bust, lighter brown on the wooden block and stand, and gray in the background.
