Rectangular box with a put-on lid; on the lid a slightly concave black field with rounded corners and a narrow gilded frame, inlaid with carved decoration of hydrangea branches, a bird, and a butterfly. Branches and leaves are dyed green. Inside are four small boxes with lids, decorated with red lacquer painted with a pattern of cherry blossoms and branches. 19th/20th century, Japan. Container. Height 8 cm, width 26 cm, depth 19 cm., A rectangular wooden box with a square compartment removed shows a group of smaller square drawers with floral branch motifs in shades of red, dark brown, black, and gold, and an open compartment with a brown interior; beside it sits a separate lidded rectangular box decorated with similar floral branches in red, brown, black, and gold on its top and sides, all set against a pale gray background.
