Double-sided gingerbread mould. Oblong rectangular mould, Schwabach, 18thβ19th century, Silesia Province of Silesia, 1742β1918. Height 24.7 cm, width 16.8 cm, depth 4.2 cm. Obverse: genre scene β a man standing by a washtub engaged in washing; behind him a woman holds a baby in swaddling clothes; below a plaque with an inscription in German. Reverse: three motifs β bottom left, a rider in a hat on a horse; above him a rectangular recess containing a second rectangle carved with the letters I and B, surrounded by geometric and plant ornaments; right side, another tripartite rectangular recess with a vertical strip of floral decoration in each segment; above it carved initials A and H. Subjects/themes: genre scenes, babies/children, riders, floral and plant motifs, decorative/applied art, gingerbread mould, social satire;, A rectangular wooden block with carved recessed designs rests on a smooth flat surface; the block shows a worn, uneven top with detailed relief carvings and rough, chipped edges, and the wood displays various shades of brown with darker brown areas and lighter brown highlights, set against a neutral gray background.
