Wooden pear-shaped peg tankard, round, richly decorated with bas-reliefs depicting Passion scenes and a Resurrection of Christ scene on the lid; lid rim and handle decorated with plant motifs and masks and studded with ivory pins; center of lid has a row of vertically driven metal pegs placed at regular intervals top two missing. Carved wood, inscriptions, figurative and Gospel/Passion iconography, noted. 17th century, Scandinavia. Height 23.5 cm; width 20.5 cm., An ornately carved wooden tankard with a hinged lid is shown against a plain gray background; the body and handle display intricate relief scenes and scrolling decoration, with the lid opened upright to reveal detailed carved work along its rim and inner surface, and there are a few small pale inlaid circular accents on the hinge and handle; the visible colors are brown tones in the wood, pale cream in the inlays, and gray in the background.
