Kontusz belt, Polish men's costume accessory kontusz belt, sewn from pieces; 18th century. Materials and construction: sewn textile with sewn-on silver fringe. Origin: Constantinople Istanbul, Turkey. Dimensions: length 302.5 cm, width 31 cm. Ornament and design: triptych heads with three floral bouquet motifs in vases palmette-shaped bases; floral bouquet pattern. Center: alternating transverse stripes — smooth and with a floral tendril motif. Borders: floral tendril motif vertical borders with silhouetted tendril showing iris flowers. Patterns include double triangles and squares. Color scheme: silver, dark brown originally black?, and crimson-pink; descriptions note alternating use of silver and dark brown backgrounds and ornaments on heads, shelves, and borders.
