Kontusz sash, Royal Silk Manufactory in Grodno; silk fabric and belt manufacturer; 1768–1780. Polish half-solid, double-sided kontusz sash single-piece heads with asymmetrically arranged bouquets of roses, alternating transverse stripes plain and with floral twig motif, and floral twig edging. Fringe sewn on one end only gold. Ornament: heads—two floral bouquet motifs arranged antithetically and surrounded by a floral garland; center—alternating transverse shelves, plain and with a floral tendril motif; borders—vertical and horizontal with a tendril motif and interlacing lines or checkerboard. Colors: recto heads background gold; edges and shelves with tendril cream; ornament pink, green, blue; plain shelf gold. Verso heads, edges and shelves with tendril light green; ornament as on recto; plain shelf cream. Weave density: heads approx. 16/34 x2; smooth shelf approx. 16/24 x2; edges and shelf with tendril approx. 60/30 x2. Place of origin: Grodno Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Poland/Lithuania. Function: clothing accessory men’s kontusz sash. Dimensions: length 290 cm, width 29 cm., The image shows two long narrow fabric panels hanging side by side on a pale background. Both panels feature horizontal stripes and floral motifs with a decorative rectangular floral panel near the lower end of each. The left panel is a muted golden beige with a darker rectangular floral section at the bottom in deep gray and brown tones, and it has a fringe of dark threads along its lower edge; the main body shows subtle bands and small floral sprigs in pale green, soft pink, cream, and touches of gray. The right panel is a lighter yellow-green with alternating pale and greenish bands and a lower rectangular floral panel in green with pink and cream flowers; its border and floral details include pale green, cream, pink, and small gray accents. The fabrics appear slightly worn with uneven coloration and faint areas of discoloration.
