Half of a dalmatic. Preserved half of a dalmatic made of red, patterned, large-scale velvet with pomegranate and thistle flower motifs brocaded with metal thread. Two panels with figures of saints are sewn onto the fabric, three in each stripe. Figures of saints with attributes placed in semicircular arcades: on the right panel — St. John the Evangelist with a chalice, St. John the Almsgiver with a staff and a book, a deacon with a book; on the left panel — St. John the Baptist, a very damaged saint with a halberd, a saint with a spear possibly St. Maurice. Embroidery in metal threads Cypriot gold and multicolored silk; stitches include flat laid on a thread base, banner, Burgundy shaded gold, Cologne, cord, and split stitches. The figures of the saints are executed on a separate base and applied; faces and hands are made of applied silk satin. Metal threads held with silk yarn two or three threads each. c. 1500, Italy fabric. Liturgical vestment. Height 89 cm, width 95 cm., A garment shaped like a tunic or robe lies flat, showing a front with short wide sleeves; it features a rich woven background of gold and deep pink with an overall floral and foliate pattern, and deep pink velvet borders around the sleeve openings and along parts of the edges. Down the front are vertical panels with narrow decorative borders containing a series of small figures depicted standing within arched frames; the figures wear robes in muted tones of green, blue, brown, and cream with pale skin tones and light hair, and some panels include a pale blue background behind the heads. The gold ground alternates with areas of deep pink damask motifs and large curving designs, and the velvet trim has a slightly worn texture. The overall colors visible are gold, deep pink, green, blue, brown, cream, pale blue, and light tan against a pale neutral background.
