Caption
Lace fragment, bobbin lace, 17th century, Flanders. Two laces sewn together across their entire width: one with straight edges, the other with strongly semicircularly serrated edges. Both feature identical rosette motifs, with the serrated lace’s rosettes framed at the bottom by a fan-shaped motif. Lace; width 21.5 cm, length 71 cm., A horizontal strip of intricately patterned lace in an off-white or cream color lies against a flat gray background, showing a repeating scalloped top edge and a straight bottom edge, with a few horizontal bands separating two tiers of openwork designs; the lace features several circular and oval motifs made from fine interlacing threads, creating a delicate mesh of loops and small openings, with scallop-shaped arches along the top and a uniform border along the bottom, and the overall visual texture is detailed and lacy in cream contrasted with the smooth medium-gray background.
