Lace fragment - shuttlecock; maker, mid-19th century, France. Lace shuttlecock used as a clothing accessory or fashion ornament. Lower edge: semicircular serrations bordered with fine serrations with geometric ornament. From the semicircular serrations upwards: a repeating floral ornament with a twig motif in triangular divisions; above this, a small twig in a regular projection. Materials: lace. Width 42 cm, length 430 cm., A length of sheer fabric laid flat, showing an overall pale gray background with an intricate embroidered pattern in off-white or cream; a scalloped embroidered edge runs along the bottom with repeating floral and vine motifs, above which a denser band of embroidered branch-like shapes rises, and a more open field of small embroidered sprigs and dots fills the upper area; the fabric shows a few small holes and a few areas of fraying along the top edge, and a small discolored spot with a brownish tone on the left side.
