Lace fragment — shuttlecock, mid-19th century, France. Lace clothing accessory shuttlecocks. Lower edge: semicircular serrations bordered with fine serrations with geometric ornament. From the semicircular serrations upwards: a repeating floral ornament with a twig motif in triangular divisions. Above this, a small twig in a regular projection. Materials: lace. Width 42 cm; length 430 cm., A rectangular piece of delicate lace fabric laid flat, showing a sheer fine net background in pale gray with an overall off-white embroidered floral pattern; the top edge is uneven and slightly frayed with a few irregular holes, while the bottom edge has a scalloped border of denser floral embroidery. The embroidery consists of a repeated small sprig motif across the upper area and a larger, more intricate series of floral sprays and vine-like patterns near the scalloped edge. There are a few small darker discolorations on the lace, and several circular holes of varying sizes scattered across the fabric. The visible colors are pale gray in the background, off-white for the embroidery, and small areas of light brown discoloration.
