Lace fragment — shuttlecock, mid-19th century, France. Lace shuttlecock for clothing accessory/fashion. Lower edge: semicircular serrations bordered with fine serrations with geometric ornament. From the semicircular serrations upwards: a repeating floral ornament with a twig motif in triangular divisions; above this, a small twig in regular projection. Width 42 cm, length 430 cm., A length of delicate lace fabric laid flat, showing a sheer net background in pale gray with an overall cream-colored embroidered floral motif; the embroidery forms a dense scalloped border along one edge with repeating vertical sprays of small cream flowers and scrollwork, and a sparser pattern of tiny cream floral clusters scattered above the border across the net; there are a few irregular holes and frayed areas near the opposite edge and several small brownish stains in places on the net; the background beneath the lace is a smooth medium gray.
