Lace fragment — shuttlecock; maker, mid-19th century, France. Lace for clothing accessories/fashion. Lower edge: semicircular serrations bordered with fine serrations with geometric ornament. Above the semicircular serrations: floral ornament repeating with a twig motif in triangular divisions; above this, a small twig in a regular projection. Material: lace. Width 42 cm, length 430 cm., A long horizontal piece of sheer fabric displayed against a gray background, featuring an overall delicate cream-colored embroidery; the fabric has a scalloped lower edge with intricate floral and vine motifs woven into a repeating ornate border, above which a pattern of small embroidered sprigs is scattered across the translucent field; the top edge is straight with some fraying and a few small holes and loose threads visible; the embroidery shows a slightly darker cream in places and there are a few small discolored spots on the fabric.
