Fragment of lace, lace, ornament: continuous, vertical twigs at the top with points between them, at the bottom a strip of edge ornament where plant and geometric tendrils intertwine. Late 18th century, possibly Germany or France. Material: lace fabric; width 9.5 cm, length 67 cm., A horizontal strip of delicate lace with a scalloped top edge and a straight bottom edge lies against a plain background; the lace is a light beige or off-white color with an intricate openwork pattern including a decorative upper border of looping floral-like motifs and a lower field of a fine hexagonal mesh scattered with small raised knot-like dots and vertical series of tiny open rings; the background visible through the lace is a smooth medium gray, and shadows emphasize the texture and openness of the fabric.
