Lace fragment, lace strip finished with flat arched teeth on one side and straight on the other. In the divisions corresponding to the teeth, an alternating flower calyx and a rhombus motif are placed, separated by parenthetical geometric forms. 18th century, France; lace, fabric; width 17.5 cm, length 308 cm., A narrow strip of lace-like fabric with a repeating ornamental pattern rests against a plain background; the fabric is primarily golden with variations of muted gold and tan, and the background is a cool gray. The lace shows a mesh ground with a scalloped lower edge and an upper straight edge, and the decorative motif alternates between curving scroll shapes and floral clusters connected by small geometric lattice elements. The scroll motifs are rounded and sinuous, the floral motifs have layered petal forms, and there are areas where threads are frayed or missing, creating small gaps. The overall texture appears delicate and airy with denser embroidered outlines and open netted sections, and the colors visible include gold, tan, and gray.
