Kontusz belt, Aleksander Unrug Manufactory Kobylka; belt manufacturer; 1781–1787. Solid, double-sided kontusz belt; length 354 cm, width 28 cm. Bipartite heads with motif of two rooted and connected twigs with flowers and leaves forming a bouquet. Center with carp-scale pattern. Longitudinal border of winding tendrils: leaves with flowers and small-leaf tendrils; crosswise border of projecting flowers with leaves; borders also include a snake motif. Sewn-on gold fringe metal and cotton. Ornament: heads—two floral motifs of two branches topped with a common trefoil; center—carp scale motif; borders—vertical and horizontal floral tendril motif intertwined with a wavy ribbon. Colors: gold background of heads and horizontal borders with blue ornament; straw background of vertical borders with gold and blue ornament; blue background in center with straw-colored scale pattern. Reverse right. Signed in the heads: KOB:/YLKI. Materials and technique: silk and gold thread; thread density approx. 22/27 x2 silk, 22/41 x2 gold. Date: 1781–1784. Place of origin: Kobylka, Poland. Function/style: Polish national costume accessory, men's kontusz belt., The image shows two long vertical fabric panels side by side with fringed bottoms; both panels feature repeating scalloped patterns and decorative borders. The left panel has a bluish-green ground with a pale yellow scallop pattern and a pale yellow floral border, and its lower section shows a rectangular panel with stylized plant motifs in bluish-green on a muted gold background. The right panel has a pale yellow ground with a bluish-green scallop pattern and a bluish-green floral border, and its lower section shows a rectangular panel with stylized plant motifs in muted gold on a bluish-green background. The fringes at the bottom are a pale gold color.
