Lace fragment, mid-18th century, France. Lace with an ornament carried on two edges and a free tendril also carried diagonally through the central part, creating large fields filled with a net of large knitted meshes. Fabric; width 3.5 cm, length 28 cm., A long strip of delicate lace in off-white and cream tones stretches horizontally against a smooth gray background, featuring a hexagonal open net pattern interspersed with denser embroidered motifs resembling rounded shapes and small floral forms, with a scalloped uneven top and bottom edge, visible loose threads and slight fraying along some edges, and subtle variations in the off-white color where the thicker embroidered areas appear a touch darker than the finer netting.
