Fabric fragment, silk, two-tone silk damask, patterned with plant motifs in the Bizarre style, ca. 1712, probably Italy. Sub-backing for the brocaded decoration is a drawing highlighted by a lighter weft color and simple weave against a darker cherry warp-covered satin background. Brocaded decoration uses gold braided thread bound with a weft weave; metal thread spun in pairs in regular shifts, without knotting longest with over 20 warps. The lighter sub-backing consists of large plant-like forms winding opposite the golden decoration, resembling palmettes suspended on a slender twig. Decoration: slender, sinuously winding golden branches bearing fanciful flowers surrounding light pink forms resembling crustacean shells and palmettes composed of leaves with jagged edges. Colors: cherry background, light pink subground, gold stitching. Weave: background – warp-covered satin cherry warp; pattern – plain weave with a grosgrain effect yellow weft; damask subground – warp-covered satin cherry with plain weave pattern light pink. Edge width: 0.4 cm; repeat width: 26.4 cm; fragment height 48.5 cm, width 51 cm., A square piece of fabric with frayed edges displaying a floral and scroll pattern in shades of magenta and dusty rose with accents of pale greenish-gold embroidery, laid against a black background. The fabric shows areas of wear and faint darker stains, with a folded corner at the top right revealing the reverse side and a small folded paper tag tucked under that corner. The patterned design repeats across the textile with large stylized leaves and curved motifs, and the lower edge includes a slightly darker magenta strip with the same decorative motif.
