Kontusz belt, Franciszek Maslowski's Studio Kraków; belt manufacturer; 1781-1806. Polish kontusz belt, solid four-sided belt, plant ornament, flowers and flower bushes; national costume accessory. Ornament: Heads — two bouquets of fanciful flowers growing from a bunch of leaves and flowers. Centre — alternating transverse shelves with rosette and floral tendril motifs. Edges — vertical and horizontal with floral tendril motifs; horizontal ones match the shelves. Borders — serrated edges and a ladder pattern. Colors: Right — background of heads, borders and shelves with the twig in gold; ornament in silver, pink, blue, white, green and ochre; shelves with rosettes have half pink, half green-blue backgrounds, ornament in gold, brown and half green-blue/half pink. Left — background of heads, borders and shelves with the twig in brown; ornament in gold and same colors as right; rosette shelves have gold background, ornament half cream, half blue. A gold fringe is sewn on. Weave density approx. 18/36 x2. Head motifs resemble those used by other Kraków workshops and likely derive from patterns appearing on some Paschalis belts. Date: 1781–1806. Dimensions: length 412 cm, width 32.7 cm., A vertically oriented woven textile with a decorative pattern and long fringe at the bottom, featuring a repeating horizontal band motif in the upper portion with diamond shapes and stylized floral elements in shades of pale peach, light blue, soft green, beige, and brown against a muted tan background, flanked by a narrow floral border on each side with green leaves and pale blue and peach flowers; the central lower section displays a pair of large symmetrical stylized floral bouquets with layered petals and surrounding smaller blossoms in similar pale peach, light blue, soft green, beige, brown, and white tones on a tan field, and the bottom edge finished with long twisted fringe in a light beige color.
