Ornamental tapestry, The tapestry is only partially preserved. The surviving fragment constitutes the main part of the tapestry with architectural-illusionistic decoration in the style of Jean Berain. The border preserved on three sides features a motif of intertwining floral tendrils. The main motif is a fragment of an architrave decorated with a mask and scrolls of acanthus leaves from which floral garlands hang. Beneath this composition, a keystone is decorated with curled acanthus leaves adorned with floral sprigs. Colors: sand background, red, brown, blue, and green ornamentation. Some analogies with tapestries from the Lorraine factory, with grotesques and the combined coats of arms of Lorraine and Orléans. Made for Duke Leopold of Lorraine d. 1721 and his wife Charlotte of Orléans. Decorative composition influenced by Berain-style ornamentation. 18th century, France. Materials: fabrics. Dimensions: height 145 cm, width 180 cm. Subjects: flowers, women, floral ornaments, garlands, borders, interior decoration, weaving., A rectangular woven textile with a pale yellow background framed by a decorative border in cream and green tones; the central field features ornamental scrollwork and floral garlands in muted pinks, reds, greens, and soft blues, along with faded beige and gold decorative panels; near the top center there is a stylized human face motif in a golden-beige shade surrounded by floral swags; the lower center shows an ornate cartouche and flowing acanthus-like flourishes in pink and red hues, with areas of wear and darker smudged marks in brown and gray; the overall palette includes pale yellow, cream, gold, green, pink, red, blue, brown, and gray, and the surface shows texture variations and distressed areas.
