Caption
Fragment of verdure tapestry depicting flowers, leaves, floral ornaments, trees, birds, pastoral landscapes and interior furnishings; densely occupied surface with tree branches, and at the bottom tall plants with broad heart-shaped leaves; a crested bird hoopoe visible in the foliage; no border. Colors: navy blue, blue, green, and beige. 17th–18th century, Flanders. Wool tapestry, height 336 cm, width 136 cm., A vertical rectangular textile with a narrow dark border shows a lush forest scene dominated by deep greens and blues in the foliage and background, with areas of muted yellow and gold highlighting leaves and branches. In the lower section a group of large rounded leaves in bluish-green tones forms a dense undergrowth, punctuated by clusters of reddish flowers with warm orange and rust accents. Midway up, tree trunks and branches in brown and ochre rise through layered foliage, and a few paler yellow leaves catch light against the darker canopy. Upper areas are filled with overlapping foliage in deep green and teal, creating a textured leafy backdrop with subtle brown branches threaded through. Overall the piece presents a richly colored natural scene with emphasis on greens, blues, yellows, browns, and reds.
