Fragment of fabric, silks, patterned brocade with floral and plant motifs, double-warp brocade, 16th/17th century, Italy. On a white and silver background, blue motifs with a cherry outline. On a white and cherry background, densely placed motifs of blue flower bushes with a cherry outline: sunflower-like flowers on a leafy bent stem, alternating in rows shifted by half the motif width, and S-shaped flower branches with a tulip and a carnation; fragmentary elements suggest additional smaller motifs between the two main ones. Construction: background in a plain warp weave of basic linen thread with bold cherry-red silk warp; additional pink silk warp binds in a twill weave the pattern threads: silk blue pattern and white background covering, plus bundles of two silver lamellas running on the surface across the full width. Pattern repeat length: 45 cm. Weaving edge: 1.3 cm wide in green with yellow, pink and white stripes. Dimensions: height 77 cm, width 21.5 cm., A worn woven textile fragment with a predominantly deep red background showing a faded floral or vine pattern in muted blue and beige tones, a vertical green border with lighter green and beige stripes along the left edge, areas of fraying and loose threads mainly in beige and blue, and the surrounding backdrop in pale gray.
