Women's caraco women's bodice, 1770s, Europe. Cream and blue silk brocaded with rose branches and colorful floral patterns; patterned fabric embellished with brocade. Straight-cut front fastened with hooks, slightly overlapping lapels; low neckline finished with a large turn-down semicircular collar covering the shoulders. Long set-in narrow sleeves, cut in a curve at elbow height. Back fitted at the waist, widened below by triangular gussets creating a generous basque/ruffle. Dark blue canvas lining; inside under the flaps a wide red canvas belt is sewn on and laced at the front; lace-up waistband at the lining. Length 56.5 cm; bottom circumference 249 cm. Maker, attributed to Brandt, Józef 1841–1915 noted in provenance., A mannequin shown from behind wears a fitted jacket with a peplum and a wide, cape-like collar, the fabric displaying pale blue and light beige vertical stripes with floral motifs in green, yellow, and pink; the jacket sleeves carry similar floral embroidery and a darker blue lining visible at the sleeve opening. The mannequin also wears a bright green cap with gold embroidered floral designs and a cream lace trim at the face edge, and a white skirt with soft pleats. The background is a uniform gray.
