Kontusz, kontusz, men's clothing, Polish national costume. Kontusz of dark navy cloth with outlets in pink-crimson fabric patterned with small flowers and twigs. Fitted at the top, the skirts overlap at the bottom. Concealed front fastening with eight haberdashery buttons. Above the fastening, a triangular neckline culminates in a high, standing, turn-down collar. The back is cut in the classic style of a kontusz, with a pole and pleats at the sides. Pockets are trimmed in the folds and decoratively edged with gold cord, as are all garment edges. Long sleeves are set in and slit from the armpits to the elbows; cuffs are turned down. 1780s, Poland. Garment; length 118 cm, bottom circumference 318 cm., A long black coat displayed on a dress form against a light gray background, with a high collar showing a glimpse of orange-red lining, white piping along the front opening, collar edges, cuffs, and hem, long sleeves with turned-back pointed cuffs, and a smooth, slightly flared silhouette.
