Embroidered pall, 18th century, Poland, liturgical vestment. Pall of cream-colored silk satin, embroidered. In the center, Mary and Child on a flower of an imperial checkerboard, from which grows a floral tendril encircling the figures. Edges trimmed with narrow gold bobbin lace. Embroidery executed with laid stitch using metal threads a plate braided on a silk yarn and in the figures' hair a wire densely wrapped in silk, held with silk yarn and split stitch using silk threads. Iconography: Madonna and Child; motifs: flowers, leaves, plant ornaments. Height 18 cm, width 18 cm., A square textile with a decorative border sits against a gray background; the fabric is primarily cream and beige with visible brown stains and spots, and it features embroidered floral motifs in shades of gold, yellow, pale green, pale blue, and muted pink; a central embroidered oval contains a small dark-toned portrait-like image surrounded by gold and brown threadwork, and a group of petal and leaf shapes in gold, yellow, green, and pink radiates beneath it; looping vine-like lines in gold thread form circular frames around several drooping flower shapes in pale blue, gold, and cream at the sides and corners; the outer edge is trimmed with an ornate gold lace.
