Church cope hood, Liturgical vestment, 18th century, Poland. Embroidery depicting a kneeling St. Francis with Christ and Mary enthroned above him; scene shows the vision in which Christ promised a plenary indulgence for those who, after confession and receiving Communion, visit the chapel granted at Francis's request by Pope Honorius III. Around the edges is a Latin inscription: PLENARIA/ PORTIUNCULA/ INDULGENTIA. Embroidery in silk threads in satin stitch; inscription embroidered in relief with silver metal thread. Predominant colors: gold, sapphire blue, cherry red, green, brown. Hood trimmed with metal lace. Function: church cope hood liturgical vestment. Height 57 cm, width 52 cm., A large cloth panel in a deep red color fills most of the image, with a scalloped metallic trim in a gold tone running along its edges; the cloth has visible creases and subtle variations in red shading, and a few small darker marks. The panel is displayed against a pale gray background that contrasts with the red, and there are small tags or pieces of paper attached near the upper edge but their text is ignored. The overall shape of the cloth is rectangular with a rounded, pointed lower edge, and the gold trim forms a repeating scallop pattern around the border.
