Appliqués are made of fragments of sparsely woven woolen fabrics; edges of appliqués are embroidered with a needle and silk thread. Some motifs are embroidered with gold thread. Tapestry embroidered and appliquéd with silk and metal threads on a dress, Syria-Damascus, 18th century. Similar 18th-century examples attributed to Syria or Turkey; such tapestries were produced in places like Banja Luka, Bursa, and Istanbul and were intended to decorate tents. Dimensions of a comparable example: height 224 cm, width 142 cm., A large rectangular textile with a dark background covered in an elaborate embroidered design featuring flowing vines, stylized floral motifs, and ornamental scrollwork in shades of gold, pale blue, pink, red, green, and cream; a central symmetrical composition shows an oversized ornate vase or urn filled with many flowers surrounded by tall decorative columns and arch-like motifs, with a hanging scalloped basket of flowers above it, while the broad border consists of intertwined flowering vines, curling leaves, and cartouche-like shapes repeated around the edges, all rendered in metallic-looking threads and colored silks against the dark field.
