Back of a throne or bishop's chair made of red velvet with an applied coat of arms of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and a Vasa sheaf. Around the coat of arms cartouche are the letters: CF/DG/PG/SP/PVE/ORD Carolus Ferdinandus Dei Gratia Poloniae et Sveciae Princeps. Plocensis, Vratislaviensis Episcopus, Oppoliensis Ratiboriensie Dux. The embroidery on the back shows the two coats of arms of Poland and Lithuania with the Vasa sheaf in the middle. Karol Ferdinand Vasa 1613–1655, a Polish prince, was Bishop of Wroclaw from 1625 and Bishop of Plock from 1643; in 1651 he became administrator of the Duchy of Opole–Racibórz. Embroidery technique: all elements embroidered on a separate base and reapplied; raised embroidery on a linen canvas base with linen threads; laid-back gold embroidery. Metal threads: plate braided on silk thread and drawn wire thread. Small elements embroidered with silk, satin and knot stitch. Attributed to ca. mid-17th century, Poland. Materials: fabrics. Dimensions: 59 cm × 48.5 cm., A rectangular textile panel with a deep red velvet background framed by a darker red border, featuring a large embroidered shield in the center topped by an ornate embroidered crown and a flat hat above it; the shield is divided into sections containing embroidered heraldic animals and figures in metallic gold and silver threads, and is edged with braided metallic cord. Symmetrically arranged around the shield are looping braided cords and tasseled cords hanging down with several tassels in metallic gold and muted beige, and there are additional metallic embroidered letters placed around the composition. The overall color palette includes red, dark red, gold, silver, beige, and touches of brown, with visible texture from the velvet fabric and raised metallic embroidery.
